about

The Musical Electronics Library is electrified to share this sample collection created by MEL founder and device-builder Pat Kraus exclusively using instruments from the library's collection.

The Musical Electronics Library (or MEL) is a lending library of homemade electronic musical devices in Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland, Aotearoa/New Zealand, and is a worldwide leader in the Scavengetronica movement.

Kraus once said of the MEL in the New Zealand Listener that "doing any kind of community project like this for me is a political thing - of self-organisation and encouraging people to take control of their lives, instead of just being a consumer, buying something someone else has made, or some robots in China. The kind of empowerment that comes from learning a new skill is a really powerful thing." He said in NZ musician magazine that he wants "to emphasise the idea of sharing and also reducing waste through re-using things and giving seemingly broken or out of date things a new purpose."

Enjoying reusing these sounds from the library to create new works and consider joining up. More info on the MEL can be found here: musicalelectronicslibrary.wordpress.com

––––

We are running a sampling workshop hosted by none other than sample-mangler and electronic music extraordinaires Kraus and HASJI!

This workshop will cover the basics of sampling including recording audio into samplers, editing, and manipulation techniques. All samples made during the workshop will be added to the newly minted MEL sample collection, a growing online resource of experimental samples freely available for download through AF Records (audiofoundation.bandcamp.com).

Free! Koha is appreciated and goes towards the ongoing maintenance of the collection. Please RSVP to mel@audiofoundation.org.nz, through the instagram page, through the facebook page, or come by the library and let us know you are coming 🙂
